Nov 21, 2023

On Monday, November 13, 2023, Benfield School proudly stood at the forefront of environmental advocacy as our students actively participated in the Newcastle City Council’s Youth Climate Change Summit. Out of the 85 enthusiastic students present at the Northern Stage, 15 were from Benfield School.

A Day of Inspiration and Action: Our students immersed themselves in interactive workshops, focusing on crucial areas for sustainable change, including low-carbon energy transition, innovative heating practices, emissions reduction from vehicles, sustainable food networks, and effective waste management. Their active engagement showcased their commitment to shaping a sustainable future aligned with Newcastle City Council’s Net Zero emissions goal by 2030.

Sustainable Engagement: Fueling their passion for a greener world, our students enjoyed a sustainable lunch from Magic Hat Cafe, championing local efforts against food waste. They also connected with guest speakers and local green businesses, enriching their understanding of the green circular economy and flood management.

Praise from Council Leaders: Marion Williams and Nick Kemp from Newcastle City Council praised our students’ dedication to environmental protection. Recognizing the vital role youth play in shaping responses to climate crises, they commended Benfield School’s commitment.

Shaping Futures in the Green Sector: In the afternoon sessions, students explored exciting career paths in the green sector. Representatives from Greggs, Siemens, Equans, and insights from Jen Hartley, Head of Economic Development at the Council, illuminated the growth of the green economy in the North East.

Looking Ahead: As a glimpse into the future, 55 Year 10 pupils from Benfield School are gearing up for a polar environments study and careers day at Newcastle University later this academic year.

At Benfield School, we deeply value our students’ efforts, reflecting our core principles: aspiration, responsibility, inclusivity, collaboration, and innovation. We applaud our students’ dedication to a sustainable and environmentally conscious future.
