British Values
What do British Values look like at Benfield?
British values are intertwined with all aspects of our pillars and all we are a school embody. It is delivered through dedicated lessons, assemblies, form-time discussions, and enrichment opportunities. The curriculum is designed to be engaging and relevant, providing students with real-world applications of British Values through interactive learning, debates, and case studies. External speakers and partnerships with organizations further enhance students’ understanding.
How are British Values developed from Y7-Y11?
PSHE at Benfield follows a structured, progressive approach:
- Year 7 – Introduction to Democracy: The basics of Parliament, government functions, and why voting matters.
- Year 8 – Human Rights & Free Speech: Understanding the importance of rights and responsibilities, exploring free speech, and recognising its limits in society.
- Year 9 – Extremism & Society: Examining radicalisation, extremism, and the role of tolerance and respect in preventing societal divisions.
- Year 10 & 11 – The Legal System: Exploring the court system, criminal and civil law, and revisiting previous topics with real-world applications.
This roadmap ensures that students develop a deep and evolving understanding of British Values throughout their school journey.
How are British values explored within key components?
- Careers: Understanding employment rights, workplace ethics, and democracy in professional settings.
- PSHE Curriculum: British Values are embedded in discussions around citizenship, law, and ethical dilemmas.
- Curriculum Links:
History & Politics: Exploring democracy, civil rights movements, and the development of legal systems.
English & Media Studies: Analyzing free speech, bias, and representation in the media.
Religious Studies: Understanding different beliefs and perspectives in a diverse society.
Co-Curricular/Enrichment (NEAT Experience): Opportunities such as student council, debate clubs, mock elections, and community service encourage active citizenship.
Universal Offer (Assemblies, Form Time, etc.): Regular sessions on democracy, respect, and legal rights reinforce key messages.
How is British Values Teaching adapted for Vulnerable Learners?
To ensure all students can engage with these important topics, we as a school provide:
- Differentiated materials to support varying levels of comprehension.
- Small group or 1:1 discussions for sensitive topics.
- Pastoral and SEN support to provide additional guidance where needed.
- External partnerships with legal experts, charities, and community leaders to make learning accessible and engaging.
